n. charlene excelsia MASSIVE. that's all i have to say about this. heavy, heavy, heavy. the vocal work is especially notable for me. reminds me a lot of Indian at times and Evoken at another. Favorite track: Healing Through Death.

xhrl_ Good heavy metal that drones and speeds up at times. Not as down-tuned as my tastes often prefer, but this is a very talented band to which it is worth giving a listen. There is a certain bleakness or perhaps 'blackenedness' to the tunes, too. The last track really nails the album for me. These dudes know their craft. Favorite track: Detritus.

Christopher Ancarrow I was very impressed with the first album from Usnea, so I was very pumped for their second; it does not disappoint! In a lot of ways it is more doomish and drawn out than the first, but I think it is a step in the right direction. The album seemed natural and not forced, like they were really playing what they wanted to. The title track is damn near perfect! Favorite track: Random Cosmic Violence.

Sekator Solid ugly extreme doom. Favorite track: Healing Through Death.

Nuno Miranda Ribeiro At the same time, more experienced and more willing to experiment, Usnea were able to come up with an album that is darker and somber. Black metal's presence and influence is a lot more discrete, compared to the first album. Songs are all different. There is great composition and melodic strength. This confirms what the first album promised: here is a band that can contribute to the metal universe in its own original way. Favorite track: Random Cosmic Violence.

Rhokeheart Superb brutal droning blackened doom! This album is top notch, I've found myself playing this alot lately. Favorite track: Healing Through Death.

about

USNEA’s Relapse debut ‘Random Cosmic Violence’ is a 4 song masterpiece. Blending the sounds of the doom forefathers like Disembowelment and My Dying Bride with the gritty sludge of High On Fire, USNEA have created a classic of the new millennium. Pulsating with tribal intensity, ‘Random Cosmic Violence’ is one of those rare records that elevates itself above the boundaries that its genre typically self-imposes. Yes, this is a mighty heavy piece of sludgey doom, but the musicality and songcraft exhibited throughout the entirety of ‘Random Cosmic Violence’ immediately place USNEA not just at the forefront of the blossoming American doom scene, but at the tops of heavy music altogether.

about

Usnea Portland, Oregon

Usnea fuse elements of funeral and death doom, sludge metal, black metal, and esoteric drone. Oppressive tone and volume combine with lyrics searching for meaning in a world full of oppression, human hierarchy and bleakness and fueled by the anger and despondency that are it's by-product... perhaps in the liberation of negativity we are truly freed. ... more
